    inscribed: ‘M.D.1’
black chalk, pen and brown ink
    155 x 208 mm.

    Provenance:

    Ian Woodner, New York

    Note:

The figures in the foreground are similar to those in the first state of Jacques Callot’s etching: Le Marché d’Esclaves. This drawing is a preparatory study by Silvestre, for the second state of the etching, issued after Callot’s death. The view of Paris in the background is the invention of Silvestre, added to Callot’s design for the foreground.
