Jacques de Gheyn II
Antwerp 1565-1629 The Haguethree peasants

Professor van Altena in his catalogue raisonné published in 1983, noted ‘One is vividly reminded of the peasants in Adriaen Brouwer’s inns. I am inclined to believe that de Gheyn copied part of an unknown composition by Brouwer. In that case, the drawing would belong to de Gheyn’s later work’.
Jacques de Gheyn II is best known for his drawings and etchings. His keen eye for realistic detail and studies of everyday life had an influence on Rembrandt.
