During a three-year stay in Italy Fearnley devoted part of the summers of 1833 and 1834 to painting the coast of the Sorrento peninsular. This small and vibrant sketch is characteristic of his work there, with the steep cliffs and fishermen on the shoreline. It is an exuberant response to the hot Mediterranean light, so different from his native Norway.
