Figures in a landscape, a fortified village in the distance
pen and brown ink, on an eighteenth century mount, inscribed ‘Guercino’
102 x 150 mm.
Provenance
Sotheby’s, London, 4th July 1985, lot 65; Private collection, Jersey.
As Nicholas Turner pointed out in the exhibition catalogue, “Drawings by Guercino from British Collections” (British Museum 1991):“Guercino made numerous landscape drawings, yet the motivation behind this prolific output and its ultimate purpose remain obscure… they were apparently made as ends in themselves, probably for the artist’s own personal satisfaction and for the amusement of his friends”.
