An old label on the frame identifies the location as Hetzendorff Castle in Austria. Krafft was a pupil at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna before studying in Paris with Gerard and David. In 1805, after visiting Italy he returned to Vienna. A more formal, but similar interior scene, ‘The Emperor Francis I giving a public audience’ is in the Osterreichische Galerie in Vienna
