DAY & FABER master drawings

    Cornelis Saftleven (Gorinchem 1607 - Rotterdam 1681)

    Portrait of a Man, possibly a self-portrait

    Description:

    black chalk with white heightening
    207 x 190 mm
    watermark foolscap, Amsterdam 1645-50

    Note:

Peter Schatborn has suggested this drawing is by the same hand as a drawing formerly in the Altena Collection (Christie’s, Amsterdam, December 2014, lot 227).  In the 1970’s, the Altena drawing had been attributed to Leendert van der Cooghen (1632-1681).  Then in 2005, Baukje Coenen argued that it could be by Cornelis Visscher (1628-1658) or Cornelis Saftleven, following a suggestion by Marijn Schapelhouman, senior curator of Drawings at the Rijksmuseum.
