DAY & FABER master drawings

    Thomas Fearnley (Fredrikshald 1802 - Munich 1842)

    Study of Pine Trees

    Description:

signed, inscribed and dated: 28 Aug 1836 / TF (lower centre right)
oil on paper laid down on board
    210 x 280 mm

    Note:

In May 1836, Fearnley returned to Norway via London and Copenhagen.  This oil sketch was painted on 28 August 1836.  Two sheets of a sketchbook in Oslo’s Nasjonalmuseet show a drawing of an overturned pine made on the same day.  From other sketches made that month we know that he was travelling through Romsdal, a county in the northernmost past of Western Norway.  In October 1836, Fearnley moved to London where he remained for two years.
