DAY & FABER master drawings

    Franz Stassen (Hanau 1869 - Berlin 1949)

    Hagan killing Siegfried

    Description:

    chalk on coloured paper
    635 x 482 mm

    Provenance:

    Private collection, UK

    Note:

In 1914 Franz Stassen completed a series of 120 designs to illustrate Richard Wagner’s four cycles of Der Ring des Nibelungen. The designs were lithographed and published, in the reverse sense, by Weise & Co. and Ludwig Schroeter, Berlin, in 1914-1930. At least three of these drawings were included in the publication: plate 1, Vorspiel; plate 9, Walhall; and plate 109, Siegfrieds Leiche. Given the correspondence in artist, sheet size, medium, compositional structure and subject matter it seems most likely that the remaining three drawings were also lithographed as part of the same series.
