A drawing by Giuseppe Maria Rolli rediscovered
We recently acquired this beautiful pen and wash drawing made as a preparatory study for a ceiling decoration. The Art Historian Tomasso Pasquali identified the subject as St Paul preaching in the Areopagus of Athens, a study for the ceiling vault of the nave of San Paolo Maggiore in Bologna, painted in 1695. Below is an image of the fresco as it is today.

San Paolo Maggiore, Bologna
Further research has revealed that our drawing’s existence and attribution was known just a few decades ago. In 1963, when it was in Janos Scholz’s collection in New York, Fernanda De’Maffei identified and published it as being by Rolli. In 1976 it was reproduced and described by Ebria Feinblatt in Notes on some Bolognese Drawings in Master Drawings, Vol. XIV.
