Horst Janssen (Hamburg 1929 - Hamburg 1985)
Golfspieler
Description:
signed and inscribed lower right: ‘Diesiger, etwas regnerischer Tag - na was soll's!’ (Hazy, somewhat rainy day – what the heck!)
drawing in pencil and coloured chalk on 18thc? paper
330 x 205 mm
Note:
In keeping with Janssen’s predisposition towards traditional methods of practice and his appreciation for art history at large, this work is composed on a sheet drawn from an old archival document or book, perhaps bleached, but leaving faint suggestions of horizontal text.
The rough edges give the drawing something of an old-masterly quality, which is typical of Janssen, who enjoyed the effect that stains, foxing, and seam marks leant to his own compositions. The age of the sheet somewhat compliments the light-hearted subject matter, whilst the pithy caption is typical of Janssen’s dry humour.
