DAY & FABER master drawings

    François Boucher (Paris 1703 - Paris 1770)

Design for an urn sitting on an extrados of an arch

    Description:

inscribed in pen and black ink lower centre: Boucher
    red chalk
    215 x 275 mm

    Note:

This drawing by Boucher shows a design for an urn, possibly for execution in stone or terracotta. The form relates to similar vessels that appear in the background of Boucher's pastoral paintings, but also to many vessels designed by him, known through engraved folios and executed pieces.

We are grateful to Alastair Laing for endorsing the attribution to Francois Boucher on the basis of high-resolution photographs, and for his help in cataloguing this lot.
