The present sheet is one of Bring’s earliest works and dated by the inscription on the recto to 1902, underscoring the sheer longevity of her career which charted the great artistic evolutions of the twentieth century. The perspectival study was drawn at Bring’s beloved Valand Målarskola and displays her technical proficiency at an early age. The study into the art of perspective reflects turn of the century academic practices and the continuation of a method that dates to the Renaissance. Innocent to the debates on perspective and realism in art that Bring’s future teacher Matisse was concurrently rousing in Western Europe, the young boy on his wall offers a sense of quiet, harmonious calm, away from the noise of approaching Modernism.
