Note:
Johann Daniel Herz the Elder was a printmaker and draughtsman from Augsburg, active during the first half of the 18th century. A nine-part didactic drawing book from 1723 designed by Herz and his assistants, demonstrates the artist’s expertise as both a draughtsman and teacher. The eighth chapter focuses on the methods of depicting nude youths, typically in the guise of bacchic revellers and satyrs. The present drawing takes after this eighth chapter, transferring the ideas conceived in the production of the drawing book into the creation of a large-scale work.
