Edouard Mérite was a painter, naturalist and explorer who trained in Paris at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle under Louis-Ernest Barrias and Emmanuel Frémiet. He made his debut at the Salon of 1888 and became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in the following year. 'Le chat sauvage' was one of Mérite’s more popular compositions and three variations on the theme are known, one of which is dated to 1931.
