DAY & FABER master drawings

    Lodewijk Toeput (Mechelen c. 1550 - Treviso 1603/5)

The angel appearing to the shepherds (recto); A mountainous landscape (verso)

    Description:

    inscribed on mount: Eismann
pen and brown ink, brown wash, over black chalk
    113 x 203 mm

    Provenance:

    with Day & Faber, London
where acquired by the present owner in December 1996

    Note:

The recto of this drawing is a particularly free and sketchy example of Pozzoserato’s pen and ink landscape drawing. In a fantastical setting, framed by a mountainside to the left of the sheet, an angel appears to a group of diminutive shepherds who look upward in wonder. On the verso of the sheet is another imaginary landscape, with an imposing settlement to the rear, flanked by tall mountains on either side.
