DAY & FABER master drawings

    Francesco Salviati, Workshop (Castelnuovo di Garfagnana c. 1520 - Venice c. 1575)

    Two bowed or sleeping women

    Description:

inscribed lower right (recto): France Salviati N.7; inscribed (verso): Frco, Salviati
black chalk, pen and brown ink, brown wash heightened with white
    287 x 219 mm

    Provenance:

with Baskett and Day Ltd, London
where acquired by the present owner in January 1984

    Note:

This drawing is, as Catherine Goguel says, "by Salviati but not by Salviati", meaning that the invention and the style are probably by the master but the execution is not. It is part of a very complicated group of late drawings in pen and ink and wash depicting large figures that should be, for the most part, referred to Salviati's workshop.

We are grateful to Marco Simone Bolzoni for his expertise.
