    Sky study, Alicante, c. 1848-1852

    Description:

    watercolour and gouache
    150 x 305 mm

    Note:

An artist and diplomat, de Meurville was appointed the French Vice-Consul in Alicante in 1848. This drawing belongs to a group of sky studies produced in the ensuing years during de Meurville’s Spanish vice-consulship. The drawings, delicate and beautiful depictions of the various stages of dusk, are in exceptional condition having largely remained in the artist’s family until recently. In June 1857 de Meurville was made Consul in San Sebastián, where he stayed until his retirement in 1872. In both places, he made landscapes of the city and its surroundings. Much his work is now preserved at the Zumalakarregi Museum in Gipuzkoa, Northern Spain.
