Note:
A study for "Mother and Child by the Sea" of 1830 now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Dahl returned to the same subject in 1840 in an oil painting, now in the Barber Institute, Birmingham, possibly as a tribute to his friend and mentor Casper David Friedrich, who died on the 7th May of that year.
