Note:

This fine ink and wash drawing is one of only a few surviving works by the little known German artist Andreas Schuch. The work is added to Schuch's known oeuvre which includes a painting after Peter Paul Rubens' Last Supper in the church of Giengen and two further drawings at the Courtauld Gallery in London.

Inspired by the Mannerists at the court of Rudolf II, Schuch takes after Bartholomeus Spranger, Joseph Heintz and Hans von Aachen, in depicting this popular voyeuristic scene. Jupiter, in the guise of a satyr, begins his seduction of Antiope, daughter of King Nycteus of Thebes.
