DAY & FABER master drawings

Franz von Stuck (Tettenweis 1863 - Munich 1928)

    Two Studies of Hands

    Description:

    circa 1880
    signed lower right “STUCK”
ink, pen, wash, heightened with white on paper
    200 x  385 mm

    Provenance:

    Private Collection, Paris

    Note:

This drawing likely dates to Stuck’s early career, perhaps whilst he was still a student at the Munich Academy (1881-1885). The academic study was, and remains to this day, a key component in the young artist’s education.

The broadly daubed dark wash provides a profound contrast with the white heightening of the hand’s delicately detailed external lines. The meticulous hatchings suggest that the drawing was intended as an isolated work and not as a preparatory sketch, evocative of Albrecht Dürer's hand studies.
