Note:
This painting forms part of a group of portraits produced by Francisco Domingo during a four-year period in Madrid, where the artist lived between 1872 and 1875. The group is thematically linked through Domingo’s choice of subjects, the worker and the quotidian. These subjects include cobblers, artists and, as in the present example, carpenters. The Old-Fashioned Cobbler, at the Prado, Madrid, and The Artist, at the Museo Bellas Artes, Buenos Ares, are two celebrated examples of the type.
